Addressing Sustainability Concerns: How Your Money Creates Genuine Impact

As in any other industry, especially in the modern era where scams and misleadings are ever more rampant, we understand these are critical questions for anyone investing in sustainability efforts. The sustainability industry has faced its fair share of scepticism and for good reason—instances of greenwashing, false promises and a lack of transparency have left people doubtful.

As such, we take extra care to ensure our work aligns with our values: impactful, authentic, accountable, and trailblazer-like mindset. Read on to see how we ensure your contributions drive real impact.

We detail all external financial expenditures on publicly available spreadsheets and documents. This lets us be transparent with every penny we spend (externally), whether allocated for tree planting, carbon capture, or eco-education projects. Here’s a link to the page —> https://www.atlas-project.co.uk/transparency

For example, if we fund a tree-planting project, we provide geo-coordinates of the tree planted, its species, lifetime CO2 absorption, photographs, as well as multi-year maintenance to help it grow. This allows us to provide periodic updates on the tree, as well as allowing our customers the opportunity to visit the location if they wish to do so in the future.

We recently pitched our Trailblazer program to Fionn Ferreira, Forbes 30 Under 30 honouree and 2019 Google Science Fair winner. After an online call, we got to work on delivering a report that showcased his personal CO2e footprint, the CO2e footprint of his digital content production and its consumption, as well as personalised lifestyle recommendations. Although clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about sustainability, Fionn showed dedication to improving his craft. Equally, this is the level of trust Fionn has in our business, and this is the level of detail we bring to all of our clients.

Late last year we signed on a business as a new client and we’re starting off small by planting trees together. This is done on an agreed-upon metric, aligned with the business’s performance. We have since shared with them the verified report, along with project-specific information. The result? Tangible proof of their contributions towards a more sustainable future.

We’re also bringing attention to the CO2e footprint of digital content. There’s a slight misconception that digital is clean, and paper, is dirty. Studies indicate that using electronic documents is less harmful to the environment than paper, but as new studies come out and electronic means see higher and higher usage, this is likely to change.

For example, did you know that the digital content you consume has a CO2e footprint? Many will know the 2017 viral hit ‘Despacito’, which at the time of calculation amassed a staggering 5.77 billion views, contributing emissions equivalent to 100,000 taxis for a year!? At the time of this writing (coincidentally exactly eight years since the publication of the video on YouTube), the video now has 8.63 BILLION views,

As such, we help individuals and businesses become aware of, calculate and then hopefully offset and reduce their digital carbon impact. We will always recommend reduction over offsetting, as only one is truly sustainable going forward.

Our values stand strong.

- Impact: Our projects are measured not just by trees planted or emissions offset, but by the long-term benefits they bring to eco-systems; humans and wildlife alike.

- Authenticity: We don’t want to be seen as ‘preaching’ sustainability but not going through with it ourselves. Our newsletters are quarterly to limit digital impact, and even our internal operations use tools like Posteo, a 100% green energy email provider.

- Accountability: We aim to work with verified and legitimate suppliers and partners. Most projects we support, are backed by geo-tracking and photographic evidence.

- Trailblazer-like mindset: From pioneering awareness about digital CO2e footprints to aiding businesses in calculating their emissions, we strive to push boundaries to make sustainability accessible, actionable and a clear investment for businesses and individuals alike.

If you’re still unsure, I understand. One article never convinced me of anything. I believe multiple sources must be researched before coming to any one conclusion. But, let us prove it to you. Visit our transparent document page ( https://www.atlas-project.co.uk/transparency) to see where our money goes. Or reach out to us directly to ask about any project or initiative we’re working on. Your trust matters to us and we’re here to earn it.

Thank you for reading. We look forward to helping your business take action towards a more sustainable future.

Signing off,

Sasha Higham,
